The Bandog Mastiff is not a kind
of a pure bred breed, like most others are. They are the descendants that have
traits of American Pit bull terrier and Neapolitan Mastiff. This breed is not
even recognized by many of the Kennels that are available now.
The history of this breed may be short but he is power enough and has magnanimous amounts of love and loyalty to offer to you.
The American Mastiff was first bred by John Swinford, a veterinarian, an American and another American Mastiff breeder was Joe Lucero. It was in the 1960’s that they bred the ultimate guardian dog. It is a cross of the American Pit bull terrier, with a large Neapolitan Mastiff female. This was named the American Bandog Mastiff. This breed came into existence just 40 years ago.
Although there are several variations in this breed, the ones bred by Swinford and Lucero produced the most stable canines. They are well known for their stability and calmness as well as their ability to guard.
The American Bandog Mastiff has a well-built athletic look with all tight muscles. There are different colors in the breed with most common being black brindle and the others being blue, black, red and tawny.
A surprising character that this possesses is it is quiet and confident about itself, as though he knows that he is tall and heavy.
Dr Swinford, if alive today, would be pleased to know that The American Bandog Mastiff would have been the most intelligent dog and also one of the best guards. This canine on the whole has one disadvantage when it comes to guarding, it is lazy to bark. Other breeds bark when he sees an intruder alerting the owner and threatening the intruder.
A loyal friend is your dog; they hate to stay at home, alone. Find out from the next door neighbor who owns a Mastiff. It can just howl for hours when it is left alone a home.
This breed is one of its kind, these giants wish to stay with the owner, they have to be taken good care of and given good food. They love to be in the company of the owner. The Bandog can get along fairly well with other puppies provided it stays at home from its ‘puppyhood’. They can get along with cats and kittens as well, but if not from puppyhood they can get aggressive.
Size, it seems is a big factor of concern, but the truth behind that is not so. They can live fairly enough with you in your apartment as long as it gets to exercise regularly, exercise is very essential to keep them active and alert on their toes.
Grooming these dogs in not going to a be a problem for you, They are easy to take care of and compared to other breeds, the American Bandog Mastiff is not so messy and just a regular daily 5-10 minute brushing is sufficient to keep him clean.
The American Bandog Mastiff is the best
companion you will have got into your family. It will live and guard you as
long as it has life in it.
