used on hunting trips to
track attack and hold the targeted prey till its owner arrived. The
Portuguese
name – Fila meaning “to hold” – is aptly suited as this breed was used
to track
and catch run away slaves. The Fila is the

The great chasing abilities of Brazilian Mastiff can be attributed to its leg and spine joints. The loose joints allow the dog to quickly change his route - though he is travelling at a full – scale gallop.
The unique characteristic of aversion towards strangers has made this dog the only breed and this served the objective. The Fila is known for its defensiveness towards strangers and its strong protectiveness of owner and property. This characteristic is shown till today.
During championships few temperament tests are run to check their Self-confidence while shooting, Attacking Ability without being instructed and their overt display of disliking and suspecting unknown people.
Brazillian Mastiff has certain standards during a dog show – The standard specially states that this breed should not “Permit any stranger (Judge) to touch it.” In addition the standard includes that if the dog attacks the judge – “It is not considered as a fault, its temperament is confirmed.”
The
Brazilian
Mastiffs are kind and affectionate with their families and on the other
side
violent and furious with the strangers. This is same with the other
type of
Mastiffs and they are charged to guard. And, above all the Loyalty of
this
breed towards their owner is remarkable.
The Brazilian Mastiff weighs nearly 100 pounds. Its height is nearly between 27 to 30 inches tall. Whereas the female Brazillian mastiff weighs around 90 pounds. she stands between 24 to nearly 28 inches tall. Their cousins, the English Mastiff and others resemble them.
The Colored coat – solid yellow, reddish tan, black and brindled colors of the Brazilian Mastiff is smooth and short.
